Howdy,

I had an Alienware 17 R3 with the GTX 970m 3 GB card, and it was definitely a soldered GPU.  The only upgrade path was to use the Graphics Amplifier port on the back (sometimes called a 'caldera port') and a supported desktop GPU.  The Alienware 17 was the last one that had a GPU in an MXM slot that could be upgraded.  If you have the older model, which was an Alienware M17x R3, then you would also have an MXM, but I don't think those shipped with 970ms.  You can use this site to explore your options, and actually purchase them too: https://eurocom.com/

Good luck!

I have that very same machine , Alienware 17 R3 6700HQ 16gb memory Gforce 970m. I swapped the SD drive with a samsung 950 pro and a samsung 850 evo for linux , no issues  . It is still running great with no issues.
