wish to upgrade components on my Alienware 17 r2

  • 52

Hello folks, i currently own Alienware 17 R2. its configuration is as follows.

*Operating System
  Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
  Intel Core i7 4710HQ @ 2.50GHz
* RAM
  8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 800MHz
  Alienware Alienware 17 R2
  Generic PnP Monitor (1920x1080@60Hz)
  Intel HD Graphics 4600 (Dell)
  3071MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M (Dell)

* Storage
 *Optical Drive
  No optical disk drives
  Sound Blaster Recon3Di

I have decided to upgrade to a 1 TB SSD to improve the performance of my laptop. on the other hand i want to know if i can upgrade any of above components whether it be, CPU, GPU, RAM or even DISPLAY if 4k is available, and If they are lagging behind current generation of CPU & GPU.

For CPU, in mean time, i will be replacing the thermal paste on it, to check if it can improve performance as my laptop is facing lagging issue from some time. Looking for suggestion as well as advice to keep my machine update for next generation gaming.

Thanks in advance.

They started soldering the CPU and GPU on the 17 R2 so you are stuck with what you have unless you want to replace your entire motherboard. You can try The Parts People to see what is available but you're still going to be limited to the 980M at best.

You will be able to upgrade your memory (most likely up to 32gb) but I have no idea about the display sorry. I wouldn't image the 970M being a great combination with a 4k display.

If you're still running a mechanical HDD then switching to an SSD will show the best results for what upgrades you can actually do.

I believe that the 17R2 is only capable of running 16GB of RAM ... I wish it would in fact run 32GB because I personally have the 17R2 and run a heap of Virtual machines.

I could well be wrong as well because I found a thread a little while back which seems to indicate that those with the 15R2 were able to install a BIOS update which then allowed 32GB of RAM to run ... if anyone knows anything further about this - that is, whether it can IN FACT be done with a 17R2 with either a 980M or in mine and the OP's case a 970M GPU then:

  • Please verify that this is possible and the BIOS update would work on the 17R2 as well as the 15R2
  • point us in the direction of the BIOS update which would be applicable IF IT IS IN FACT POSSIBLE

The thread I am mentioning where the owner is indicating that a BIOS update is allowing for 32GB of RAM to be run on his 15R2 can be found here if that helps you in answering:

Cheers - and sorry I can't really help with your original question a great deal @batm0bile
