Valve Wants To Moderate Steam Comments

  • 1379

Valve is about to start moderating comments across Steam’s game hubs. In a blog post released last night, the company announced that its moderation team “will start reviewing reported discussion posts in all game hubs on Steam.”

Valve points out that the moderation team has already been reviewing reported content across much of Steam. That includes user reviews, screenshots, and posts in community groups, and action has been taken against those found to be in breach of the platform’s guidelines. Valve says, however, that until now it’s been “hesitant to get involved in the moderation of individual game discussions.”

Valve does say it won’t be “actively perusing” comments, but it’s an interesting step nonetheless, from a company which has commented on its lack of desire to moderate Steam in the past. Earlier this year, the company said that it will allow any game on its platform as long as it’s not “illegal, or straight up trolling.”

Elsewhere, however, the company has been more vigilant in policing some of its fringe communities, deleting several hate groups from the platform back in March. The new moderation system will begin, with an expanded team behind it, on September 25.

There is view that should not be there when there not game related. I believe there should be some control there.

Personally I don't mind. some things people post aught to be censored.

I think that comments should be unregulated unless reported.

Well this is actually a refreshing change of pace for Valve in general. Their constant hands-off policy on darn near 95% of everything else in Steam was both exhausting and infuriating. The fact they're just now considering this possibility doesn't raise much confidence in me on how well it will be implemented. Knowing typical Valve it will be poorly enforced similar to their somewhat recent "quality control" requirements for new indie games shambling onto the platform. In all my years on Steam I've seen stalking, harassment, theft and hate speech more or less more times than not go unchecked. It's going to seem like an impossible task for Valve because they've let it get so bad. It would be best described like having a bad infection in your finger and waiting 3 months later to get it checked out only to find out when you went to do something about it, the doctor tells you your whole arm has to come off because you let the infection spread too deep...

Good. Now, when is Valve going to start moderating all the shit games flooding Steam?

Planetary

So does that mean we won't be seeing any more of the Official Alex Jones Gamers' Club?

Aw, shucks!

(Sarcasm.)

I'm so tired of this Orwellian BS flooding the on-line world! Time to moderate Valve... off of my computer.

Indeed. This SJW rage mob bullying and censoring anything they see "offensive" and whatnot has no place on gaming platforms.

Reading news and seeing what is happening around the world (social platforms banning conservatives, Article 13, UK proposing bill to restrict closed forums on social media, Chinese social credit system) you have to realize things will only get worse if we don't fight back.
