Gray background hard to read

This gray background makes the text very hard to me to read. 
Unfortunately it seems to be a fad among a lot of designers lately, but it really screws up my ability to discern letters properly. The smaller they are, the worse it gets. 
How can I change the background to something else?
Just to be clear, the background of the text boxes, not the background of the page itself.
