Upgrade M17XR4

  • 0

Hi,

I have an older laptop the M17XR4 and i have a bit troubles with fps drops when im playing. So i was wondering now that i could stop this by upgrading my graphic card? I was looking around a bit on forums and i saw that i could install the Geforce GTX 980M in my laptop. Is this true or not? and if its true what do i also need to change and how do i need to do it other then taking the old one out and the new one in?( i mean in settings in pc before and after)

These are my specs now:

22GB Ram

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3630QM CPU @2.40 GHz, 2401 MHz, 4 core('s), 8 logic processors

Nvidia GeForce GTX 675M

Windows 10 home

Thx in advance

Greating J.

I wrote a long winded response earlier but it seems to have disappeared.

Yes, you can fit a 980M, 1060 or 1070

You need a modified driver, new thermal pads and thermal compound. I do not belive you need an unlocked BIOS for the 980M.

You are best to also upgrade the CPU to a 3840QM or 3920XM but you will probably need a new dual pipe heatsink.

Head to the Alienware forum at NotebookReview more more help as there are still a few of us using and working on these old machines.
