RAM and Video Card Change

  • 2

I have an M17x and I am trying to find some more RAM and a new Nvidia.... any suggestions? I have 4 4gb RAM sticks right now and a 680 Nvidia. I prolly wanna go to 32 gbs of RAM if it isn't too crazy expensive. Do alot of modding and daaaang do alot of games start turning into a blackhole without enough RAM.

I bought some RAM last week and lol even though it was a 204 pin RAM stick it wa slike 2wice as long as my current pin slot configuration... perhaps if I like rebuilt the intake port it would work... haven't changed the body or any internals really on my laptop so I am looking for something that fits into my laptop without having to moddify it rn....

I am assuming you have the M17x R4 if it came with the GTX 680M.

Yeah you definitely bought the wrong memory, see if you can return it. Go for some Crucial 1866MHz DDR3L SODIMM memory. It's just plug and play and pretty cheap on ebay. The 2133 memory jumps up in price quite a bit and isn't really worth it. You cannot use DDR4 ram in the M17x R4. It has to be DDR3 or DDR3L - The L stands for Low Voltage and started being used from the next gen 13, 14, 17 and 18 models but it is backwards compatible. 16gb is plenty for gaming, 32gb+ is for video rendering and design work.

The R4 can support up to the GTX 1070 GPU (you may need the 120Hz display for this upgrade though, I can't remember). A 980M is a lot easier to get working but you'll need a modded Nvidia driver and possibly the unlocked BIOS.

I have a GTX 1070 and 1866Mhz memory in my M18x R2 which is of the same era as your M17x R4.

You can also upgrade the CPU to a 3920XM or 3940XM but you will need the dual pipe CPU heatsink, if you don't already have it. Lower grade CPU's came with a single pipe.

I went with 3

Timetec Hynix IC 16GB Kit (2x8GB) DDR3L 1866MHz PC3-14900 Unbuffered Non-ECC 1.35V CL13 2Rx8 Dual Rank 204 Pin SODIMM Memory RAM Module Upgrade (16GB Kit (2x8GB))

  which should be solid.

eventually will upgrade the cpu and gpu

the crucials look good but this timetec was more affordable and could get 3 for the price of 2 crucials, I should be set for some awesome designing in the fall, light show vibe and time based art. Also modding and adding in elements to games should be a lot smoother  with less crashing.

i got

Timetec Compatible 8GB DDR3L 1866MHz PC3-14900 Unbuffered Non-ECC 1.35V CL13 2Rx8 Dual Rank 204 Pin SODIMM Memory RAM Module Upgrade (8GB)

  like this

and now the laptop is soo smooth on running higher res items. Forza 4 horizon for example is beautifully playing on a mid range specs setting.

the ram oddly was deisnged for mac, yet it is fully fine on my windows 10 build.
