I've been using a Cooler Master Storm SF-19 for 6-7 years. I think they discontinued them years ago but mine has been great. Suits my 18" machine nicely.
I've just bought CM (Notepal L2, power of wholesale decided ;)) also and waining for delivery.

i never used any cooling pad, its just a waste of money imo.
I use intel XTU and down core the voltages. its more worth than those creepy coolers.
Effectiveness of cooling pad strongly depends on the location of the ventilation holes on the bottom of the laptop. Also I've read opinions (and tests) where one large-diameter fan is recommended instead several smaller ones.

I just place my laptop on my desk, turn on the AC when it's hot, and place a small book on the back side of the laptop so the air comes in and out without any problems !! voila !!

The main advantage to a cooling pad is pretty much just getting the back end up to increase air flow. The fans built into the coolers do very little if anything in terms of helping. I use a CoolerMaster U3+ and the fans unplugged or plugged in make zero difference, it's the act of getting the back up and allowing more air flow that really helps.
You can use a set of bottle caps or something a little nicer like laptop feet off Amazon and it will have the same effect as a cooling pad for the most part.

Yeah just use some small books to keep it around 1-2 cm above the desk to keep it ventilated.
